Official in Taiwan’s Tainan city detained for suspected bribery

The head of the Tainan City government's Economic Development Bureau was taken into custody and being held incommunicado early Friday morning for alleged involvement in multiple crimes, including accepting bribery, according to the Taiwan Tainan District Court.

Chen Kai-ling (???) has admitted to forging official documents and receiving monetary bribery, banquets and sexual bribery, but denied committing property crimes of unknown origin, said Liu Hsiu-chun (???), a spokeswoman of the court.

Prosecutors applied to detain Chen on Thursday after interrogating him, and the court approved the request and agreed to allow them to hold him incommunicado as it considered Chen a flight risk, capable of destroying, forging or colluding with others to tamper with evidence, Liu added.

The Taiwan Tainan District Prosecutors Office formed an investigation team after it received tips-off in March that Chen was suspected of committing bribery, and that they considered him a suspect in several corruption crimes, prosecutors explained.

Chen and two witnesses were brought back by prosecutors for questioning on Wednesday as they raided six locations in Tainan, including Chen's residence in West Central District and the Tainan City Hall, prosecutors said.

They seized a total of NT$300,000 (US$9,796), the business card of a civil engineering company, along with other evidence, prosecutors said.
