Taiwanese donate over US$2.77 million to Turkey relief fund

The Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW) said Friday that it has received more than NT$83.53 million (US$2.77 million) in cash donations for relief efforts in earthquake-hit Turkey.

The total received from the donations, numbering 8,148 in total as of 5 p.m. Thursday, represented a big jump compared to the NT$10.33 million that had been collected as of Wednesday.

Meanwhile, starting on Friday, people looking to make donations can do so though an account established by the Bank of Taiwan or through kiosks at branches of the four major convenience store chains in Taiwan, said Yang Ya-lan (???), deputy head of the MOHW's Department of Social Assistant and Social Work.

People wanting to make donations to the Bank of Taiwan account (003001727277) can do so by using any one of the bank's branches or ATM, or on the internet.

Alternatively, they can transfer funds for Turkey from any bank branch into a Central Bank Treasury Department account (270750) or from any post office into a dedicated post office account (50269506).

The account name in both cases is the "Ministry of Health and Welfare Disaster Relief Account" (?????????).

People making donations from overseas can do so using a dedicated account (00709118680) at Mega International Commercial Bank (swift code: ICBCTWTP007), specifying the beneficiary and use as: "Ministry of Health and Welfare Donation A/C" and "Turkey Earthquake Project" respectively.

People donating through ATMs or bank branches should write down their names, phone numbers and addresses on the transfer slip and fax it to (02)8590-6065 or email a copy of it to 1988SW1957@mohw.gov.tw to receive a receipt, the MOHW said.
