Taiwan’s Chen takes silver at weightlifting world championships

Olympic bronze medalist Chen Wen-huei (???) took second in the women's 64-kilogram division at the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan on Sunday.

Chen finished with a combined lift of 232 kilograms to finish one kilogram behind gold-medal winner Neama Said of Egypt, who last competed in a major international event in August 2019 when she took part in the All-African Games.

Egypt was banned from the 2019 world weightlifting championships and the Tokyo Olympics because of doping violations.

Chen also won a bronze medal for the snatch with a lift of 97 kilograms and a gold medal for the clean and jerk with a lift of 135 kg, which gave her a combined lift of 232 kg.

In the snatch, which requires an athlete to lift a weighted bar from the floor to above the head in one movement, Chen succeeded on her first lift of 97 kg but could not complete either attempt at 101 kg.

She then completed successive lifts of 126 kg, 131 kg and 135 kg in the clean and jerk, where an athlete must first bring the bar up to the chest before jerking it overhead, to give her a clear edge for the combined silver over bronze medalist Park Min-kyung of South Korea, who had a combined lift of 217 kg.

2021 has been a milestone-setting year in Chen's career. In April, Chen took home gold in all three categories at the 2020 Asian Weightlifting Championships, followed by a bronze medal in July at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

Both events were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
