The production value of Taiwan's semiconductor industry totaled NT$4.08 trillion (US$146.76 billion) in 2021, representing a 26.7 percent year-on-year increase, the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) reported on Thursday.
ITRI forecast that the figure will grow a further 17.7 percent this year to reach NT$4.8 trillion amid strong global demand for semiconductors.
Based on statistics from ITRI's Industry, Science and Technology International Strategy Center, the IC design sector posted production value of NT$1.21 trillion in 2021, representing the highest annual increase of 42.4 percent.
The IC manufacturing sector registered production value of NT$2.22 trillion and year-on-year growth of 22.4 percent, ahead of the IC packaging sector with an output value of NT$435.4 billion and a year-on-year rise of 15.3 percent, tallies showed. The IC testing sector also grew 18.4 percent to reach NT$203 billion.
Looking to 2022, the center forecast that the global semiconductor industry will continue to grow, with production value expected to increase 8.8 percent as a result of continued robust market demand for 5G and business laptops.
